Upon arriving in Hermopolis, I realize that I’ve seen this town before. It was one of the ferry stops on my way to Mykonos. It is absolutely gorgeous. A mixture of derelict buildings and colourful churches. It’s a maze of alleys that Google maps can’t always navigate but I’m happy to get lost. The town is built into a hillside with all the churches at the top, so I’ll be getting my steps in today.
Was eating my breakfast on a bench beside a church and started chatting with Petros and his ninety year old father, Vasily. We chatted about the state of the planet and how we must look after it, the poor economy in Greece and what a struggle it is for people here. I love these interactions with the locals. I was going to ask to take a photo of them but they had to rush off as Vasily received an emergency phone call from his wife at home.
I was taking a break from climbing stairs and met a lovely Finnish woman who had immigrated to Greece fifty years ago. She invited me into her garden for some shade and water which was gratefully accepted.
Continuing my journey upwards I found a little cafe surrounded by bright pink flowering trees that served fresh lemonade and decided it was a good spot to rest for a bit. In this heat you need to take it slow and hydrate often.
To end off the afternoon I treated myself to Ciel Beach Bar that has loungers and a bar right on the water. I relaxed for a couple hours with more fresh lemonade and a Greek salad before heading back to the boat for the night. It’s ten days into my trip and I’ve probably eaten the equivalent in pounds of feta cheese!
